Promises of the open-source is not just web servers but in this everyday communication too, your phone system.

Asterisk is an open-source phone system software. As free and open software, it is a remarkable service. However normally it takes a bit of propeller-head to configure.

Making it easier, there is a bootable install version of Asterisks with software, announcements and many great features all ready to go. Trixbox despite of its name does not trick but it tricks configuration into simple bunch of clicks to set up your own phone system.

There are lots of features, more features than you ever need but you have them.

What most people need is just bunch of simple features which Trixbox simplifies. But whatever you can configure is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more but beyond DIY skill sets.

One can have auto attendant, voice activated menu system, great voice mail integrated with email server, easy extension management and the list goes on.

If you want to try, google Trixbox and download it and burn a CD with it. Boot a cheap PC with it and install TrixBox Asterisk. It will take altogether with a few hours and it is fun. For that, you get a great PBX and you can use IP phones like Polycom, Cisco and software phones including your computer anywhere and everywhere.
